Tully Library Report to the Community
Greetings from the Tully Free Library! Once again we'd like
to take a moment to share with the Tully Community the details
of what we've been up to in the past year.
What's New
Lots of new and exciting things have been happening at the
Tully Free Library in the past year. To keep up with the ever-changing
times, we have started a collection of Books-on-CD. We have
also put our computer software into circulation for Library
patrons to check out and use at home. Finally, our Children's
Story Hour for 3-5 year olds has been so successful that we
have made it a weekly event. The Children's Story Hour is
held every Friday morning from 10:30am - 11:30am throughout
the school year.
Our Cardholders and Circulation
We are pleased to announce that we have added 232 new patrons
this year. Approximately 400 members pass through our doors
weekly. Our total circulation for 2000 was 47,624, which is
up more than 5.8% from 1999. Total holdings in 2000 reached
16,188.
Our Funding
Being a "Free" library actually means that we are totally
responsible for our services. Our operational funding comes
from the local area and beyond. Our 2000 funding consisted
of:
|
The annual library proposition on the Tully School
District Budget
|
$ 30,000.00 |
|
The Town of Tully
|
$ 9,000.00 |
|
The Village of Tully
|

|
The Town of Fabius
|
$ 500.00 |
|

|
Fines & Fees
|
$ 5,750.00 |
|
The Annual Fund Drive
|
$ 7,506.00 |
|
The Annual Book & Bake Sale
|
$ 1,429.00 |
|
Private contributions / Endowment
|
$ 716.00 |
Our Collection
In 2000 the Tully Free Library spent a total of $19043.00
on books, AV materials and periodicals. The Library purchases
its own books and other materials; title selections are made
by the Director and Assistant Librarian. New items are purchased
weekly, and throughout the year we continue to build all sections
of our Library collection. This includes adult, young adult,
and juvenile fiction and non-fiction; picture books; books-on-tape;
books-on-CD, videos and computer software. Picture books,
adult mysteries, large print books, and books-on-tape continue
to be our most popular items. Our reference section is another
area that receives continual updates. Many of our newest reference
materials are in computer software format. We also receive
54 different magazines. Some are donations from patrons; eight
have been donated by Ballweg and Lunsford Funeral Home.
Part of the Onondaga County Public Library System
The Tully Free Library is a member of the Onondaga County
Public Library System. This provides many benefits for both
the Library and our patrons. Our automated system makes it
easy to check materials in and out, access patrons' records,
conduct searches, check the status of any item, or place a
hold on any item throughout the whole 31 member library system.
Tully Free Library patrons can also access the Onondaga Library
web page from their home computers to do all of the above.
(www.ocpl.lib.ny.us)
The Tully Free Library also offers several services that
provide our patrons with access to a wider variety of books.
The Library borrows material on a three month loan from the
Central Library. Books, tapes and research materials from
any library in the system can also be ordered and picked up
here at the Tully Free Library. We have delivery services
Monday through Thursday throughout the year. Finally, the
Interlibrary loan department service allows patrons to borrow
books from outside the system on a one month, no renewal basis.
Tully Free Library Children's Programs
The Tully Free Library held 30 Children's Story Hour sessions
for 3-5 year olds in 2000. We averaged 14-16 children per
session. Our Summer Reading Program was also a great success,
with approximately 50 active participants. The younger children
earned tickets for weekly drawings based on how many books
they read. For every 200 pages they read, the older children
received clues to solve a mystery. Again this year, the Library
received so many donations for prizes from our volunteers
and patrons that we didn't need to request the generosity
of our local businesses. OCPL also supplied wonderful raffle
tickets and gift certificates for the older participants.
The Tully Free Library Endowment Fund
The Tully Free Library Endowment Fund was established in 1990.
In the past decade, the Fund has continued to grow gradually.
We ask our patrons and friends of the Library to remember
the Fund when the time comes for estate planning and/or memorial
gifts. All donations to the Fund are tax deductible. As a
condition of the Fund, its principal must be maintained. Therefore
all donations provide on-going support for the Library through
the interest earnings on the principal.
The Rosamond Gifford Community Room
During 2000, the Rosamond Gifford Community Room was used
an average of 5 times a week. The room was used for a variety
of teacher meetings, tutoring, all levels of Scouting, after
school programs, board meetings, club meetings, dog obedience
school, adult training seminars, the Library's Annual Book
& Bake Sale, and the Library's weekly Story Hour.
Although there is no charge for use of the room, the Library
always appreciates a donation to help offset the expenses
of heat, lights and general upkeep. The room must be reserved
in advance, as it is a popular meeting place. Questions or
requests to reserve the Rosamond Gifford Community Room should
be addressed to the Library Director at 315-696-8606.
Our Services
The Tully Free Library has two Internet accessible computers
and one word processor that are available for use by our patrons.
We also have a 3.1 Windows computer and a brand new Windows
95 computer used by our younger patrons to access our very
popular interactive storybook programs. For a small fee to
offset expenses, copy and fax services are available. Our
bulletin board is also at hand to promote local community
events.
Our Staff
The Tully Free Library has two part-time employees: Lorraine
Tickner, Director; and Sonja Shepherd, Assistant Librarian.
Our dedicated volunteers are vital to the Library's continuing
success. During the year 2000, our volunteers donated over
1,900 hours of service.
