The Caverns Creek Grist Mill
Just 1 mile away from Howe Caverns is a 180 year old working, water powered grist mill. Open from Memorial Day-Labor Day, the Mill offers a unique step back in time. This wonderful part of Americana has been meticulously restored a shows how flour was produced for our forefathers, using 1400 lb. Millstones powered by a massive 12 ft. waterwheel. In back of the Mill is a tranquil 1 acre Mill Pond, which offers the photography buff a great picture--complete with a full reflection of the Mill in the Pond. There is a 1 mile Nature Walk that parallels the Mill Race and Old Mill Stream. The upper part of the Mill is a Museum with all the original equipment in place as well as unique exhibits tucked into the original grain bins. Guided tours feature Milling of Cornmeal, operation of the waterwheel, lessons on history, science social studies and nutrition. The Caverns Creek Grist Mill can be reached at 518-296-8448 and will be open soon from 11am to 6pm. Come on, put your nose to the grindstone, give us a call so you can say "You've been through the Mill!"
