FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK
back...
Dear Folks,
In January we had an exciting time with all the officers
of the church (our mid-winter huddle). We decided to move
into a new pattern of organization for the Tully United Community
Church, including adding a new board and distributing the
work load more evenly. At our leadership night, the first
Monday in February, we met as six boards trying our new pattern
of leadership. The same evening, at the church council meeting
we received, for future action, the report of the temporary
audit committee recommending a comprehensive financial policy.
These two actions have led to the conclusion that there
will need to be some major changes made in our constitution
to accommodate how we intend to live and work together in
the future. So far, we are experimenting with these ideas.
However, at our annual meeting on July 21, 1996, the congregation
will be asked to take action on the constitution. Some of
the structures which worked to get us where we are today are
not adequate to meet today's needs.
We have also totally regenerated our local mission thrust,
the Fisherman's Net. After a brief vacation, it is once again
meeting the needs of those in our community who need emergency
assistance. There are times when we all need counsel or help
in our everyday living, and there are many organizations that
offer help when needed. Our Fisherman's Net is there to catch
those people that don't fit the guidelines of the helping
organizations and would otherwise fall through the cracks.
Lent is a time when we check out our everyday life to
see where some parts of our spiritual life may have slipped
through the cracks of our busy lives. It is a time to review
how prayer, Bible reading, attendance at worship, and other
spiritual matters are attended to. It is a time to renew our
intentions for these parts of our life.
This year Janet Gleason gave a boost to our Lenten season,
getting us all to contribute to a Lenten devotional booklet.
It is a wonderful resource written by members of our congregation.
I am leading a Lenten study Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m.
and Sunday evenings at 7:00 p.m. of the book Meeting Jesus
Again for the First Time by Marcus Borg. Besides this
our Sunday morning worship and Sunday School program are both
designed around the Lenten theme of journeying with Jesus.
I hope you take advantage of these resources for renewing
your spiritual life during Lent.
The purpose of Lent is to renew and refurbish our relationship
to God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Our journey with Jesus
is from Galilee to Jerusalem. Jerusalem is the place of death
and resurrection, at one time, tomb and womb, where we move
from what is in our lives to what can be for our life. May
God bless your journey.
Shalom!
Nelson Reppert
FROM OUR MINISTRY INTERN
back...
We decided to include Janet's Lenten devotional that
was printed in the Lenten devotional booklet that she so diligently
organized and published. We are including the entry that was
designated for March 1, 1996, World Day of Prayer.

World Day of Prayer
Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and
I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from
me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find
rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is
light. Matt. 11:28-30 (NIV)
I can't remember when I first heard these words of Jesus
uttered to me, but the invitation by Jesus to come has been
a part of my experience for a very long time. They are for
me some of the most comforting words of Scripture, and I turn
to them again and again.
To what is Jesus inviting us? Most immediately Jesus
offers us rest when we are weary, and when I am weary that
is exactly what I need - some time away, some time to replenish.
But rest is not the last word, for then Jesus says to take
on his yoke - a symbol of obedience and hard work.
He tells us that his yoke is easy and his burden is light.
Wow! We know better than that! How can Jesus' burden be easy,
and why would he ask us to take it on for ourselves?
What these words say to me is that Jesus has found the
secret to burden-bearing and wishes to share it with us. "Learn
from me," Jesus says to us, "and you will find rest for your
souls." As difficult as Jesus' load must have been, he found
peace by being in constant communion with God, by pausing
for prayer, by keeping everything in perspective. When our
heart and spirit are well, the burden will be light, won't
it?

Monday, 10:00 a.m. March 4, 1996
The Lillian Bigsby Circle will meet on Monday, March 4, 1996,
at 10:00 a.m at the church. Betty Smith and Mary Haynes are
in charge of the program for the day. At 10:15 a.m. our guest
speaker will be Lorrie Spaulding. Lorrie is one of the last
school nurse teachers in Onondaga County; she is also the
founder and leader of Helping Hands, a group of Tully High
School youth. Come and learn about all the positive things
these young people are doing. Those attending the meeting
on March 4, 1996, are reminded to bring a bag lunch. Beverage
and dessert will be provided.
A reminder: Mondays will be missionary day; you are reminded
to pray with us for our missionaries. You are also reminded
to bring your Tops' tapes and place them in the box located
on the table by the name tags or give them to Fran Dennison.
For every $400 in Tops' tapes received, we will receive $1.00.
To date, over $10,000 in tapes has been turned in; we have
earned $21 that will go toward White Cross mission projects
that the Circle sponsors.
Our love offering boxes will be collected at the March
meeting. Those attending are also reminded to bring along
their Campbell soup labels and Scott paper product (54000)
labels. The box for the labels is located on the end table
in the Murdock Lounge. The Scott labels are sent to the Ronald
McDonald House in Syracuse and the Campbell soup labels are
donated to the Tully Elementary School.
We will begin planning our program for the 1996-97 year
ahead so bring along your ideas for programs to the March
meeting.
ADULT FELLOWSHIP NEWS
back...
The adult fellowship group will enjoy an evening of volleyball
at the school on Friday evening, March 15, 1996, beginning
at 7:00 p.m. Following volleyball the group will go to Roger
and Cheryl Haskins' home on State Street for dessert. Be sure
to sign up on the sheet located on the office window if you
plan to participate. Desserts will also be needed for the
refreshment portion of the evening. If you plan to provide
a dessert, please indicate this when signing up, or call Sharon
Hoogs 696-5009.
On Saturday, April 13, 1996, at 6:00 p.m., the adult
fellowship group will hold their annual progressive dinner.
The meal will be held at three different locations (appetizer,
main course and dessert). We will need three locations, one
for each course. If you can host one of the courses, be sure
to let Sharon Hoogs know (696-5009) as soon as possible. It
takes a great deal of planning for this annual event.
REORGANIZATION
back...
At our January huddle we decided to try out a new design
of organization for the Tully United Community Church. The
purpose was to redistribute the work load more fairly among
the leadership. We decided that we needed six boards. All
of the boards work under the church council, which carries
the policy- making responsibility for the congregation.
- The Board of Trustees - to care for our property
- The Board of Deacons / Layleaders - to care for the
spiritual life of the congregation
- The Board of Christian Education - to provide quality
education for all ages
- The Board of Stewards - to inspire the financial support
of TUCC
- The Board of Mission and Outreach - to extend our helping
hand to the community and world
- The Board of Personnel Relations - to care for and
encourage our emloyees
Ours is a very active church. The programs we provide
are meaningful and significant for the congregation and for
the community. We want to continue to provide quality leadership
in church and community.
Last year the church council appointed a temporary audit
committee to look at the recommendations made by the person
who audited the church's books for the year. We wanted this
committee to make recommendations for changes of policy to
address the suggestions made by the auditor.
The church council will be acting on the recommendations
made by the temporary audit committee over the next few meetings.
The financial policy document will cover eight recommendations:
- Control procedures for money-raising process,
- Control procedures for money-spending process,
- Financial soundness,
- Reporting,
- Investment controls and procedures,
- Staffing and job descriptions,
- Record retention, and
- Role of permanent audit committee.
It will make our life together easier to have something
written down concerning how we do things here at TUCC.
BLOODMOBILE - MARCH 30, 1996
back...
The American Red Cross will hold a bloodmobile at the
church on Saturday, March 30, 1996, from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00

donate blood to support this effort.

are welcome; however, appointments would be appreciated.

Betty Smith (696-5115) or Helen Estey (696-8575). Thank you.
CHURCH HIGHLIGHTS
back...
New members will be welcomed into the church during morning
worship on Sunday, March 10, 1996. If you would like to become
a member of this church at that time, speak with Mary (Kuhn)
Huntington (696-8332) or contact the church office. All those
joining the church on March 10, 1996, are invited to a get-acquainted
dessert gathering on Saturday evening, March 9, 1996 at 6:30
p.m. at the parsonage.
Infant and children baptisms/dedications are held at
the convenience of families and can be scheduled anytime.
If you would like to have your child baptized or dedicated,
please contact Nelson Reppert as soon as possible.
Communion will be celebrated during morning worship on
Sunday, March 3, 1996. Communion will be served in the seats
at the 9:00 a.m. service and by intinction at the 10:30 a.m.
service. The board of deacons-layleaders continues to take
communion to shut-ins on communion Sunday. If you know anyone
who would like to receive communion at home, please contact
the church office or any member of the board of deacons.
Communion Sunday is the traditional day to bring donations
for the loaves and fishes food pantry. A box will be located
in the narthex for donations.
Prayer chain news: Anyone that would like to become a
member of the prayer chain is asked to contact Dot Dodge (696-8276).
This is a vital part of the church; more people are needed
to participate.
SYMPATHY: We join in extending our sympathy to the Preston
family on the death of Ed Preston on February 8, 1996. Funeral
services were held at Hartwell Funeral Home on Sunday, Febraury
11, 1996. Ed is survived by his wife Beatrice and daughter
Eleanor.
We continue to hold a coffee hour fellowship at 10:00
a.m. on Sunday mornings. Members of the board of deacons-layleaders
take turns setting up and preparing coffee fellowship refreshments
each week. Donations of baked goods are needed to help with
refreshements. A sign-up sheet is located on the refreshment
table on Sunday mornings.
Our Cans for Christ program provides needed funds for
Fisherman's Net. Please deposit your rinsed out, returnable
aluminum beverage cans and glass and plastic bottles in the
cans for Christ bins located in the east entrance way. We
are in need of someone to sort, count and redeem our returnable
bottles. If you can help, please see Betty Fairchild or contact
the church office.
The Loaves and Fishes food pantry is available for those
in need in our community. Donations of canned foods and non-perishable
food items are always needed. Please bring your donations
to the church anytime and leave them in the church office.
A REMINDER: Green Hills' rebate. As most of you know,
Green Hills extends a one per cent rebate to area churches
from purchases made by those who have a card that they use
each time they shop. The program will run for nine months
beginning February 4, 1996, through November 2, 1996, based
on purchases made with your Green Hills' card.
All those who were enrolled in the 1995 rebate program
must enroll again for 1996 and designate this church as their
choice. The sign-up list is by household; purchases made with
a husband and wife's card will be added together for figuring
the rebate for the church designated, one church per household.
Customers must spend a minimum of $500 per household during
the nine month program. This total has increased since last
year's program. Once the $500 minimum has been met , Green
Hills will rebate one per cent of the household's total purchases
made during the nine month period to the church.
Those who shop at Green Hills and are not presently signed
up for this program are urged to go to the service desk at
the store to register and receive and use your card each time
you shop. Those signed up need to go to the service desk to
re-enroll.
All proceeds from this program are deposited in the general
fund of the church.
LITURGICAL DANCE GROUP NEWS
back...
A liturgical dance group began meeting in mid- February
on Sunday mornings from 9:15-10:00 a.m. in the Christian education
wing of the church. Liturgical dance or interpretive movement
is a form of religious expression that has been around for
centuries, from the joyous circle dances of the early Christians
to the slow-motion kneeling of a lonely soul in search of
God. In the early part of the twentieth century, dancing as
a sacred art was neglected, even discouraged by many religious
leaders; however, in recent years it is once again finding
its place in worship. "A time to mourn and a time to dance,"
the Bible tells us. Perhaps this is the time for a fresh source
of inspiration. If you are interested in participating or
would like more information, please contact Janet Hillenbrand
(696-8758).
LENTEN DEVOTIONAL BOOKLET
back...
Janet Gleason, our ministry intern, is happy to announce
that the Lenten devotional booklet has been completed and
is available at the church for those who have not yet picked
up their copy. We are very pleased with the booklet and hope
you will find it helpful as a daily devotional guide as we
work or way through the Lenten season.
Thank you to all those who submitted an entry for the
booklet.
If you receive the newsletter and do not live in the
Tully area and would like a copy of the booklet, drop a note
to the church, 5872 Meetinghouse Road, Tully, NY 13159-9528,
and we will send one to you.
TIME TO THINK SUMMER CAMPING

a mailing, please contact Judy or Jay Tinker (696-8274), our
camping co-ordinators from this church, and they will get

ANNUAL ROAST BEEF DINNER REPORT
back...
The Board of Deacon-Layleaders report that the annual
roast beef dinner fundraiser was a huge success. Over 160
dinners were served. At this writing we do not have any totals
on the amount that was raised for the church. Thank you to
all those who supported this fundraising effort and to those
who provided homemade pies for dessert.
The talent show, with seventeen acts, was a great success.
Thank you to all those who participated. A special thank you
to Mike and Tina Cornue and Bev Fishlock for helping coordinate
the evening's entertainment.
RICH LANDERS INSTALLED AS PASTOR

back...
Richard Landers, our ministry intern from September 1993
to August 1994, was installed as the pastor of the First Baptist

attended the installation service. They report that it was
a beautiful and moving experience. We all send our CONGRATULATIONS
to Rich. For those who would like Rich's address: P.O. Box
69, South Street, South New Berlin, New York 13843.
Rich sent a note to Pat Wayne, a portion of which she
would like to share with you:
Although I expected good attendance from Tully at my installation
service, I was surprised to see so many. Even though I want
to be here at the South New Berlin Church, I know it is a
big change for me.
Hope all is well with all of you.
Love,
Rich

In an effort to encourage families with children to attend
church events, the board of personnel relations will coordinate
babysitters to watch children at the church. The following
guidelines should help make this service run smoothly:
- Contact person is Kim Guttendorf 607-842-6880.
- Coordinators of special church events should call Kim
at least 3 days before the event.
- Parents who need sitters for regular church activities,
(i.e. choir rehearsal) should call as soon as they know
they need a sitter.
- Parents are asked to pay for the sitter. We would like
to offer a minimum of $5 per hour.

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS
back...
Sunday School classes meet during both the 9:00 and 10:30

to read the take- home packet provided in the church bulletin
for each unit.
CENSUS
back...
As we indicated in the last issue of the newsletter,
you will be receiving a sheet from the Board of Deacons /

wants better addresses for our mailings, so you will be asked
to check the label on the mailing you receive. We have a new
data base program for our computer system so you will be asked
to check your membership status as well. We hope everyone
will respond to this request and complete and return the post
card that will be included with the mailing to the church
for the requested information is important in order for us
to update our records. Thank you in advance for your help!
25th ANNIVERSARY
back...
We remind you that this year we celebrate the twenty-fifth

A thank you note from Sarah Kruth, a recent student of
the week:
February 9, 1996
Hello Everyone!
I want to thank you for the note you sent. It arrived during
a very crazy time, and put the smile I so desperately needed
back on my face. It is always comforting to remember how many
people there are to care and support. To those who asked questions
- Yes - Mrs. Conklin I still write in my journal (surprised
?) Staying warm isn't usually a problem (the temp in the dorms
is kept around 80 degrees).
I am keeping busy with the theatre. The next show opens
two weeks from today. I can't wait. Once again thank you all.
It made my day.
Love,
Sarah
A note from Diana Gradwell.....
Thank you so much for keeping in touch with me; however, I
am now very happily situated here in Mount Pleasant, South
Carolina, enjoying work, new friends and most especially the
weather. I've looked forward to Nelson's letters and the church's
goings-on. Much happiness to you all and thank you for all
you did to help me on my way.
Sincerely,
Diana
A note from Gladys Usher....(a recent T.L.C. recipient
of the week)
Dear Reverend Reppert and other members of my church
family,
Thank you so much for remembering me with a valentine. I would
like you to know the happiness it brought to me to read all
those names and realize you were thinking of me. It brought
back pleasant memories of my more than 40 years as one of
you! Thank you again.
Best wishes and Christian love, "agape" to all.
Gladys
A note from Herman and Ruth Murdock.....
We were very happy to receive the copy of the Lenten devotional
booklet. It was a very unique idea to put together this booklet
in which many shared their contributions.
Our thanks to all who helped in making this a Lenten
gift, and our greetings to all who are in this really great
church!
Sincerely,
Ruth and Herman Murdock
